Publicly, it’s panels, press releases, and pilot projects. Privately, it’s white-knuckled risk assessments and whispered war stories of models gone rogue. Everyone’s cheering at the AI party, but if you listen closely, you’ll hear the quiet click of the panic room door.

Fintech’s Double-Edged AI Boom

Fintech leaders aren’t afraid AI will fail. What terrifies them is that AI will work too well during development, then say something wrong after the production deployment, and trigger a million-dollar compliance meltdown. Why the gap?

Almost half of fintech leaders are concerned about hallucinations (AI’s tendency to fabricate information). In the Lucidworks global survey, data security (45%) and accuracy (43%) were the top barriers to AI adoption in financial services.

This tension is especially visible across Asia-Pacific, where fintech innovation is booming.

DBS Bank CEO Piyush Gupta is cutting 10% of his workforce due to AI efficiency gains. Yet he refuses to unleash AI directly on customers until hallucinations are under control. One step forward, one step back.

Even as APAC banks explore AI, they remain wary of a misstep.

In China, for example, enthusiasm cooled markedly: only 49% of Chinese AI leaders planned to increase AI spending in 2024 (down from 100% the year prior), according to Lucidworks.

Managing AI’s risks is now a top priority, but that’s in direct conflict with the urgent need to lower operational costs through automation.

It wasn’t long ago that people dismissed AI apps as “just OpenAI wrappers.”

Anyone still saying that has clearly never tried building one that doesn’t blow up in production. We learned that AI isn’t a magical tool that can handle everything and make employees redundant. Some, like Hello Digit (fined $2.7M), learned it the hard way.

Hallucinations Erode Trust and Raise Risks

“AI hallucinations” happen when your model confidently riffs like a charismatic best man. Eloquent. Assured. Catastrophically wrong. While preparing this article, I was using a popular AI tool to find source material. I had to remove over half of the quotes it found because they weren’t remotely related to the topic, even though I was using a state-of-the-art AI model with deep research capabilities that I had paid extra to access. Imagine if I hadn’t checked. Imagine if I had quoted them to you as fact. You’d question everything in this piece. That’s the trust problem fintech faces daily.

In casual contexts, hallucinations may be amusing or just slightly annoying. But in finance, they are dangerous.

Customers see hallucinations every day, so they don’t trust AI for financial information. Consequently, fintech leaders don’t trust AI either.

As Tim Law, research director for artificial intelligence and automation for IDC, observed:

“LLM hallucinations or fabrications are still a top concern… always mentioned as a top concern in mission-critical functions, especially in domains like healthcare and financial services…”

“Hallucinations are still an inhibitor for adoption in many enterprise use cases.”

That concern is echoed at the highest levels.

The European Central Bank warns that AI models’ tendency to “hallucinate” can distort financial decisions and undermine risk management, potentially threatening stability.

Hollywood promised me a Terminator. What I got is a yapping accountant with a broken calculator and a bad memory.

And we can’t ignore it.

Costly Consequences: When AI Makes Things Up

Hallucinations don’t just break trust. They can break the bank, too.

Take Air Canada. Their chatbot confidently invented a “bereavement fare” (a discounted rate for mourners) and promised it to a grieving passenger. The policy didn’t exist. But the airline had to honor the discount anyway. The machine lied. The humans paid.

Now, imagine a fintech chatbot doing the same. Only this time, it invents a nonexistent loan offer. Except here, regulators, not grieving passengers, come knocking. One error, millions in liability.

As fintech advisor Bob Bartleson put it:

“Hallucinations at scale can tank productivity, especially in finance, where a wrong call on interest rates could cost millions.”

And we’ve already seen how fast things can spiral. When Google’s Bard gave the wrong fact in a public demo, it spooked investors and wiped $100 billion off Alphabet’s market value. One wrong sentence. One hundred billion gone. Yes, markets bounce back. But not everyone is that lucky.

A lawyer who used ChatGPT to draft a legal brief got fined $5,000 for citing fake cases. Real court. Real money. Real consequences.

Still, AI accuracy isn’t out of reach.

Stripe Radar, for example, handles billions of transactions, flagging fraud accurately in milliseconds. According to their report, Stripe Radar is wrongly blocking only 0.1% of legitimate transactions.

The message is clear: hallucinations are liabilities. They erode customer trust, invite regulatory scrutiny, and unleash operational chaos as teams scramble to contain the damage.

Fighting the “Hallucination” Crisis: Strategies and Hope

We aren’t powerless against AI hallucinations.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) forces AI to source answers from verified data, making interest rates much harder to fabricate.

Knowledge graphs cross-check AI outputs against structured key facts before reaching users.

Other guardrails include:

  • Forbidding chatbots from answering sensitive queries
  • Sophisticated semantic parsing
  • Human-in-the-loop reviews

An Accenture-backed startup recently unveiled a “100% hallucination-free” AI assistant for wealth advisors. Their strategy? Never let AI generate the final answer. Instead, users receive source documents and interpret them directly. Their decision suggests a new rule: If you can’t do something reliably, maybe don’t do it at all.

Of course, it’s not that simple. A mathematical proof says hallucinations are inevitable. At the same time, the demand for “hallucination-free” guarantees is growing. Can the creators of AI models meet that expectation? Industry leaders are trying to balance creativity with reliability. “If you train AI models to never hallucinate, they will become very hesitant… A rock doesn’t hallucinate, but it isn’t very useful,” notes Jared Kaplan, co-founder and chief science officer of Anthropic.

That tension is exactly where fintech must make a decision. When should an AI say “I don’t know” versus guessing? Many firms are leaning toward caution, especially for customer-facing or regulatory-related applications.

“For critical applications like analyzing a company’s financial data, AI tools can’t make mistakes,” stresses Sridhar Ramaswamy, Snowflake’s CEO.

In his words:

“The insidious thing about hallucinations isn’t just that 5% of answers are wrong – it’s that you don’t know which 5% is wrong. That’s a trust issue.”

That’s why many generative AI initiatives remain stuck in internal pilot projects. They haven’t made it to customer-facing tools yet.

As Baris Gultekin, Snowflake’s head of AI, explained:

“Right now, a lot of generative AI is being deployed for internal use cases only, because it’s still challenging for organizations to control exactly what the model is going to say and ensure the results are accurate.”

Hallucinations remain the “biggest blocker” to broader rollout.

Turning Accuracy into Advantage

Getting a handle on hallucinations isn’t just about avoiding disasters. Reliable AI is becoming a competitive advantage in fintech. Firms that solve the riddle of reliable AI unlock:

  • Efficiency
  • Personalization
  • Cost savings

Without inviting reputational or regulatory risk.

For example, banks that deploy proven-accurate chatbots can offload routine customer queries, offer 24/7 support, and cross-sell products confidently. If, and only if, the chatbot is accurate. “Financial services face unique challenges in adopting AI, but with the right measures, you can use this technology securely,” a Lucidworks fintech report concludes.

What are those measures? First, you need to know what kind of hallucinations you are facing. Then, you need to measure the quality of AI’s answers. Your quantifiable results build trust.

Trust is the currency here. If customers and regulators believe a fintech’s AI is truthful, then the fintech can lead in AI-driven services.

But an AI mistake that goes viral can set a company or an entire sector back years.

That’s why a new mantra is emerging in 2025: “Transparent AI.”

Financial institutions are increasingly expected to:

  • Show their work
  • Provide sources for AI-generated content
  • Clearly label AI outputs

The creativity of generative AI is a double-edged sword. Yes, AI generates value. But unchecked creativity introduces unacceptable risk.

The firms that thrive will be those who tame that double edge and channel AI’s power within rigorous accuracy frameworks.
